National Museum of Wales
From Cardiffpedia
The National Museum of Wales is a real treat right in the heart of the city. A big white sandstone building crammed to the rooftops with temporary exhibitions (there's usually something good on for the kiddies) and a permanent collection of art that is truly amazing for such a small place as Cardiff.
There's plenty of pretty porcelain, a fairly good showing of modern and welsh art, and many rather dull 18th Century oil paintings. But for me the centrepiece of the museum's collection is a very good selection of Impressionist paintings (including some great works by Renoir, Monet, Pissaro, Cezanne, and Van Goch). These were all collected and donated to the museum by two rich 19th Century party-girl sisters (Gwendoline and Margaret Davies, from Mid-Wales) who used to hang with the impressionists in Paris and snap up masterpieces on the cheap.
It's free to get into the museum, which is open from 9am - 5pm Monday to Saturday.
